Herbal Medicine

I’ve been working as a medical herbalist in south London and Surbiton since 1999, using my knowledge of Western herbs and medical diagnosis to help people suffering from a wide range of health problems, from hot flushes, insomnia and period pains, to irritable bowel, veruccae and arthritis. Many of the problems you might bring to your GP can be successfully treated using herbal medicine – and with less risk of side effects.

I work holistically, using the roots, flowers, leaves, seeds and barks of medicinal plants to create tailor-made treatments which support each patient's unique healing powers. I use over one hundred organically grown western herbs sourced from top quality, ethical suppliers, as I believe the quality of herbs used makes a significant difference to the effectiveness of treatment.

Some herbs should not be taken alongside orthodox medication or if you are pregnant or suffer from a serious medical condition. I am fully trained to prescribe safely and effectively in such cases. I can also help answer questions you may not have time to ask your doctor.

Your first consultation will last about one hour and includes a detailed case history of your health, diet and lifestyle together with clinical examinations such as a blood pressure check if appropriate. Treatment may include nutritional and life-style advice as well as personalised medicine of up to 10 or more herbs ideally suited to your needs.

Follow-up visits are shorter and usually occur every 2 to 4 weeks until treatment is complete. They offer a chance to review the prescription, address additional problems and discuss the progress of dietary or lifestyle changes

As well as my work in private practice, I have also worked as a locum herbalist at Whipp’s Cross Hospital Dermatology department, and designed and ran training seminars in herbal medicine for staff at Neal’s Yard Remedies across the UK. I have also been invited to lead a number of educational herb walks at venues including The Barnes Wetland Centre, The Natural History Museum WildLife Garden and Wandsworth Common Nature Study Garden.

Clinical Hypnotherapy

I decided to train in clinical hypnotherapy in 2003 to add a new dimension to my work as a medical herbalist. I believe many health problems can be greatly improved if a patient’s mind can be trained to alter unhelpful behaviours or habitual ways of thinking and feeling. Hypnotherapy is a marvellous tool for achieving such positive change.

The first session will normally last one hour, and provides an opportunity to take a full case history, set realistic goals for treatment and experience a short period of relaxation. Follow-up sessions will last up to an hour, and always include a period of work in trance, as well as advice and feedback as appropriate. I normally teach my patients how to carry out self-hypnosis at home so they can boost the effectiveness of our sessions together. I may also suggest dietary and life-style changes when appropriate. As a qualified medical herbalist, I can also offer herbal prescriptions if requested and appropriate.

I treat a wide range of medical conditions from panic disorder, IBS and depression, to high blood pressure, chronic pain, psoriasis and insomnia. Hypnotherapy can also be used, when appropriate, to control acute pain, e.g. by reducing discomfort during childbirth, minor operations or dental work.

Hypnotherapy also has an important role to play in life-style changes, from weight control and stress management, to stopping unwanted habits such as smoking or nail-biting, and tackling phobias such as fear of flying or specific animals. If you feel ready for change, then hypnotherapy may be all that’s needed to set the wheels in motion.

I also believe that hypnotherapy can be a powerful tool for personal development too - helping to build self-confidence, improve relationships, boost sports performance, beat writer’s block or simply feel more positive about your life.

Fertility Treatment

I have a particular interest in hormonal and fertility issues, and have worked successfully with many couples to help create the right conditions for conception and full-term pregnancy.

My therapeutic aim is to ensure optimum reproductive health and overall mental and physical vitality for my patients. I achieve this by nourishing and toning whichever systems of the body are under pressure. This may include treating the liver (to improve hormone metabolism), the digestive tract (to counteract auto-toxicity), the nervous system (to reduce stress), the cardio-vascular system (to improve circulation) the wider endocrine system (thyroid and adrenals in particular) as well as the reproductive organs themselves.

Some of the conditions I commonly see include:
polycystic ovarian syndrome, thyroid imbalance, poor sperm motility and/or volume, psychogenic infertility, obesity or low body weight, peri-menopausal infertility, excess body heat in men/women, low body temperature in women, fibroids, endometriosis, infrequent or absent periods, impotence, recurring miscarriages.

I’m also experienced in working alongside, and boosting the outcomes of, orthodox medical interventions such as IVF, ICSI, egg/sperm donation and clomid therapy.

Training

Herbal Medicine
I trained for four years at the College of Phytotherapy and gained my Diploma in Phytotherapy (Herbal Medicine) in 1999. I regularly attend post-graduate training seminars run by the National Institute of Medical Herbalists and similar bodies, and carry out personal study to keep abreast of developments in herbal medicine and health matters.

Hypnotherapy
I gained my certificate in Clinical Hypnotherapy from the London College of Clinical Hypnosis in 2004, and went on to pass the Diploma in Clinical Hypnotherapy in 2005. Both qualifications are ratified by the University of Greenwich. In 2006 I gained the LCCH Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy, which is accredited with The Royal College of Nursing and The Open University, and enables me to use cognitive behavioural techniques in my hypnotherapeutic work.
The London College of Clinical Hypnosis was founded in 1984 in order to further the clinical value of hypnotherapy for a variety of medical, psychological and somatic problems. It is involved in a number of on-going research projects with teaching hospitals in the UK.
